Format war: WINNAH!

I don't generally rant here about the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD format war, but it's safe to say I thought it was really stupid and that we, the consumers, were the losers. Last time (beta vs VHS) people just jumped on in and hoped but this time they were waiting.

Well the scales started slowly tipping, and HD-DVD has, as of this morning, officially given up. Blu-ray for the win. Unfortunately it's Sony. Oh well - a winner is better than what we had.

So if you were thinking about buying a new DVD player, you probably should be thinking one with Blu-ray. Personally I'll just wait until Microsoft makes a plug-in one for the Xbox (assuming I have an xbox by then). Doesn't do me much good without a new TV anyway. Yes, I do have a nice big TV but it's 5 years old and that means it lacks for the super-high end stuff. Frankly I don't own enough movies to care anyway.

Well all that's left now is to wait for the second generation players to come out later this year.

As you know, I bought the "Eye of God" (Pioneer PRO-150FD, thanks for the mini-van ride and setup help, WizarDru)and I feel no pressing need to watch "Planet Earth" just yet. The Hi-Def channels on Comcast Digital do just fine for now (last week's Lost... WOW!)

Until some of the A-List anime titles come out on Blu-Ray, I am content to wait. I watched some hi-def (720P) torrent episodes through the X-Box video streaming of Gundam 00 and my jaw hit the floor.

This is just Toshiba admitting what everyone already knew. When Warner walked (and took groups like New Line with them), the war was over. Toshiba was smart to cut their losses.

I'm pretty sure that your TV can do 1080 throught one or two of the component video inputs.

You are correct - it can do 1080i through.. um... two of them I think. It can only do 480p through one, and can't do 1080p or 720p at all.

I reckon I'll replace it in a year or two.
